1. IDLES - Joy as an Act of Resistance
2. Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
3. Black Panther OST
4. Tyler Childers - Live on Barn Radio I & II
5. Courtney Barnett - Tell Me How You Really Feel
6. Kristina Murray - Southern Ambrosia
7. Mike and the Moonpies - Steak Night at the Prairie Rose
8. Jennifer Castle - Angels of Death
9. Brandy Zdan - Secretear
10. Caroline Rose - Loner
11. Shame - Songs of Praise
12. Sean Burns & Lost Country - Music for Taverns, Bars, and Honkey Tonks
The IDLES record is hopeful, mean, honest, angry, and inspiring. The Kacey Musgraves album is almost perfect. Black Panther is already a top 5 all time soundtrack. Tyler Childers’ live record is infinitely better than any of the Nashville-produced shit he’s done before (proof that shiny production can fuck a good song up). Courtney Barnett’s record is probably better than the 5th spot I gave it, cause it’s fucking great.
Honourable mentions: US Girls, Boots & the Hoots, Vince Staples, Amanda Shires, Emily Nenni, Lonesome Ace Stringband, Father John Misty, Sarah Shook, Pistol Annies… All of these honourable mentions were hard to take off the final list. Each got regular spins at work, the car, the kitchen, and everywhere else I found an aux cord.

1. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
2. Valerie June - The Order of Time
3. Fiver - Audible Songs From Rockwood
4. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - The Nashville Sound
5. Caroline Spence - Spades and Roses
6. Megan Nash - Seeker
7. The War on Drugs - A Deeper Understanding
8. Partner - In Search of Lost Time
9. The Weather Station - S/T
10. Lilly Hiatt - Trinity Lane
11. Julie & The Wrong Guys -S/T
12. SZA - CTRL
Since I started doing these lists in 2009, this might be the strongest list of records since 2013. Arguably, it’s probably deeper. For a little perspective, Lilly Hiatt’s record (10th fave this year) holds up to most records I’ve put in the top 5 of previous years. 2017 was a dumpster fire, but the music was an exception.
A lot of albums could be on an honourable mentions list, stuff like Sheer Mag, Randy Newman, Joan Shelley, Margo Price, Beth Ditto, Vince Staples, Deep Dark Woods, etc etc etc.
What can I say about these records that hasn’t been said? Kendrick’s third all-time-classic-album in a row. Valerie June’s record feels so good. Fiver’s record would’ve earned any grad student two masters degrees (one for the music, the other for the liner notes). Jason Isbell is holding all those Nashville motherfuckers accountable by simply writing truthful songs. Caroline Spence broke our hearts 11 times on one record.

The Highest Order made a dope record. Prolly spun it 30 times the first month it was out. They played Still Holding live at the Copper Owl back in the summer. That night I came to the conclusion that they’re also the best live act in Canada.
Marlaena Moore opened for Fiver and US Girls in the spring. Halfway through the second song of her set, I left my spot on the floor and bought the album. Her vocal performance that night blew me away. Gaze is grungy as fuck and I love it.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba have released security camera footage showing a man apparently dressed as a hockey goalie outfit breaking into a Russell beer store on August 15. The Russell RCMP said: “Anyone with information about this theft or has played against a goalie matching this description is asked to call Russell RCMP.” The man and his accomplice stole several crates of beer in the raid.
This was where I purchased my first LEGAL beer. This exact vendor.

I still don’t know how I hadn’t heard of Sturgill til after Metamodern came out. In that Gun & Garden interview he did with Merle he said, “Personally, I thought my first record, High Top Mountain, was a better album. I put a lot more effort and craft into the songs. I worked harder on it.”
I don’t know how it would’ve felt to put out a record like that and only get minimal attention. Would’ve tortured me. Thank goodness he kept at it.

College friend most likely to start a commune and write a manifesto has done exactly that, it feels like we are officially grown-ups now.
